“There are two educations. One should teach us how to make a living and the other how to live.” – John Adams
In this interesting initiative of Let’s Build my School, we propose a three-layered perspective towards the learning process, EXPLORE | EMPOWER | EXPERIENCE. Creating a safe place for the students within a vibrant environment, educating them, letting them explore and learn new ideas. At the same time, empowering them with life skills while experiencing a holistic learning process.
This proposal works with the theory of Form, Function and Feeling. The importance of these three elements is being discussed by various designers in the last decade, while it is the synergy of the layers that is essential for a successful design. We believe that the most valuable skill of a designer is the ability to synthesize these diverse needs into cohesive solutions.
We introduce three elements towards a more hands-on approach to learning;
1. FORM to EXPLORE - a place where they get to explore and indulge in academics. The classroom blocks become a reference to learn the values of DIY construction, a sustainable solution for future living. In addition to classrooms hosting curriculum education, they turn into venues for digital learning, weekly cultural programs for community, vaccination, etc.
2. FUNCTION to EMPOWER - multi-disciplinary approach to education emphasizing on providing hands-on experience in practical daily life activities. This will take place in the activity areas, the smaller courts attached to each block. This is where the students are encouraged to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Activities like rainwater harvesting, sustainable farming, waste management are introduced in the process for their day-to- day needs.
3. FEELING to EXPERIENCE - the ability to understand, use, and manage their emotions to communicate effectively, empathize with others, and overcome challenges. The central court acts as a nucleus, encouraging the students to come together, share their experiences and work as a team. The climate-friendly courtyard space will provide the opportunity throughout the day, to bring in the values learned within the protective sanctuary, to share and recreate experiences.
A similar analogy of a this approach has been shaped with the three fundamental spatial elements – the blocks, the functional courts and the central courtyard. The building itself works as protective fencing to the education sanctuary, tying everything into one experience.
