SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL
To build a school is a complex task of great responsibility. As in the soil in which one intends to grow a crop, the space of a school should be fertile and adequate for growth. It should therefore be a place of shelter, but also an environment with sufficient freedom so that the roots of personal development and of creativity can sink deep into the soils of knowledge. These ideals are embodied in this project through its single building, which unfolds into a multitude of spaces that offer different combinations of light and temperature, bearing in mind their functional uses, but also with their poetical potentialities.
The building allows one to gaze the vast horizon and the sky for those who seek freedom and awareness of their surroundings. It also offers havens of introspection and focus, such as the nests and burrows that can be found throughout the building. The school’s paths are clear and discernible, while at the same time reserving spaces for contrasts and surprises. As for its outside, what rests is a fragmented picture of wonders inviting curiosity for what lies within.
1 - POETRY of VERTICAL USES
The visual contact between the students of different ages and classes in this institution happens with the vertical connections. By this exchange, they can learn and watch one another, thus providing the opportunity to interrelate and enable image repertoire to improve.
2 - MEMBRANE
There is seduction in a space when one has their apprehension pulverized by glimpses of their surroundings. And while this enclosure composed of a multitude of windows and pictures is responsible for thermic comfort it also accounts for the potential of poetic knitting. It is, after all, a space for learning, and thus it should be inspiring.
3 - FREE GROUND FLOOR
Its ground floor is a pivotal element in charge of a plural multitude of spatial articulation. On its daily basis, it hosts the school entrance, multi-use space for classes, break-times, and ending hours. And there are occasions where this wide ground floor nests the unprecedented, or even the spontaneous. This space and project will empower creativity, art, and school life.
4 - BASEMENT
The programs designated to inhabit the undergrounds are those whose interactions are paralleled with those standing as roots. Libraries, administration offices, faculty, and garden belong there, so in a way, their influence irrigates upwards throughout the vertical body of this building. There is also a good acoustic bonus gained in virtue of this choice and those uses make good use of it.
5 - RAMP
Here lies a very versatile space. Inspired by the idea of a stage that can host great meetings, while being visible on different planes and perspectives. The ramp is the background seen by students who look downwards. The bleachers promote the transition from the inclined plane of the ramp to the center platoon. And it does so in a way that also reveals both libraries clustered underground. From the administration offices' point of view, this element links its presence with the entrance gate. Also establishing, although accessible, a more reserved ambiance.
6 - ROOF TERRACE
We believe that educating yourself is a process to better prepare oneself for future challenges in the world. We thought it was proper to fetch the opportunity of its higher ground in order to establish the geographical apprehension of its site, surroundings and Bamako’s horizon. Besides, it accommodates external activities and the cafeteria belongs there too.
